Jen: Please help me welcome Kylie Brant to Book Talk. Kylie, will you please share a short bio with us?
Kylie: I’ve written twenty-five books for Silhouette Romantic Suspense (Intimate Moments) and three dark romantic thrillers for Berkley. I’m a two-time Rita finalist, five time Romantic Times nominee and a 2008 RT Romantic Times Career Achievement winner. My books have won the Daphne du Maurier award (two-time overall winner) and one of my releases is listed on Romantic Times’s all-time favorites list.
Jen: Tell us about Waking Nightmare and where it's available.
Kylie: Waking Nightmare kicks off my Mindhunters series for Berkley. Each book features a forensic investigator working for a private agency that consults with law enforcement on particularly puzzling or high profile crimes. Waking Nightmare features Savannah detective Ryne Robel and forensic profiler Abbie Phillips tracking down a vicious serial rapist. Abbie discovers the process by which the offender is selecting his victims—the seemingly random acts of torture are actually calculated to match each victim’s darkest fears. And the stakes are rising. While they study the devious psychopath, he’s watching them—the next objects of his horrifying obsession.
The book is available online and in bookstores and releases September 1.
Jen: At what age did you discover writing and when were you first published? Tell us your call story.
Kylie: Ooh, this gets embarrassing! I’ve been writing since 1990. My kids were ages 12, 11, 7, 4, and 4. I had thought with the twins getting older, I was going to have all kinds of time on my hands so decided to write a book like the ones I enjoyed reading. This was pre-Internet and I was totally ignorant of the process. I didn’t belong to any writing groups and didn’t know anyone who was writing. When I deemed the manuscript ‘ready’ I
Suffice it to say, that’s not the way to go about it! She told me about tip sheets and query letters so I went through that process, got an invitation to submit and sent it in. In my ignorance I figured I’d hear back in about six weeks. Ahem. Four months later I got a two-page rejection letter from a senior editor telling me everything she liked and didn’t like about the manuscript. She invited me to revise and resend, which I did.
This time, a little wiser, I went ahead and started another book. Which was lucky, because it was six months before I heard back this time. I got another two page rejection letter inviting me to revise and resend. I finished the second manuscript and submitted that before revising the first yet again and resending.
When Silhouette called in 1992, I was actually home from work in bed with laryngitis. Leslie Wainger’s (then senior editor of the line) assistant was calling for my contact information which—go figure—I hadn’t included in the information with the manuscript. She assured me that Leslie was reading the manuscript at that minute and would be calling me later.
After I hung up, I started to wonder if I’d dreamt it! I couldn’t figure out why she’d tell me that before it was a sure thing. I had half convinced myself the call was a product of a Vicks Vapor Rub induced hallucination, when Leslie did call a couple hours later with an offer to buy the book. When she learned I could barely talk she offered to call back the next day but there was no way I was lettering her off the line!
The offer was for my second manuscript. A few months later she bought my first one, as well. So while I can claim to have published the first manuscript I ever wrote, honesty forces me to admit that it went through major surgery several times first!
Jen: How does your family feel about your career?
Kylie: They’re proud, although my kids tease me unmercifully about it. Now that they are old enough for some of them to read the books, they understand how much research goes in to them and that they aren’t a string of love scenes tied together! My husband reads all my books, which is really something since he’s not a lover of reading. He helps out by bringing me meals at the computer when I’m under deadline and driving me to my speaking events.
Jen: Describe your writing in three words.
Kylie: Gritty, emotional, suspenseful
Jen: Do you have a writing routine?
Kylie: I also teach full-time so the routine depends on whether it’s summer or during the school year. During summer I get up and exercise a couple hours and sit down to write. My goal is ten pages a day and I don’t get up until I accomplish it.
During the school year my writing time is reduced to nights and weekends, and that gets a bit grueling. My next three books are due by September 1, 2010 so every spare minute is spent writing.
Jen: How do you pick the character’s names?
Kylie: I make note of any names I hear that I like. Professional sports rosters are one place I look for ideas. Occasionally I’ll go to an Internet site for baby names. For last names I peruse phone books. But often a last name just pops into my head once I’ve chose the first name.
Jen: Do you feel as if the characters live with you as you write? Do they haunt your dreams?
Kylie: Certainly they’re constantly in my head as I write the book. They can be very pushy that way! But because I work full-time, I have to compartmentalize my time quite a bit so during the day when I’m teaching I’m not really thinking about my books very often. And when I’m writing everything else ceases to exist.
Jen: Is there a genre that you’d like to write? Is there a genre you’ll probably stay away from and why?
Kylie: I’m writing in my favorite sub-genre so feel very lucky that way. I’ll probably never write straight contemporary or women’s fiction because I always feel the need for action, for something to happen. I’d probably have four women sitting down for tea and an escaped convict would kidnap one of them or something I get bored easily, both in books and movies.
Jen: What five authors or people, from the past or present, have been important to you as an author? What question or comment have you always wanted to say to them?
Kylie: My parents have probably been the most influential people in my life. They always made me feel like I could accomplish anything. Both have had books dedicated to them. Authors that have influenced me are Nora Roberts, Elizabeth Lowell and Linda Howard. I’d like to tell them that if they had only written faster, I wouldn’t have run out of reading material and felt the need to start writing myself!
Jen: What has been your highlight of your career to this point?
Kylie: The lasting friendships I’ve made with other authors. I remember going to my first RWA conference in 1992. I didn’t know anyone and I was totally star-struck whenever I’d see one of my favorite authors from afar. I love getting together with writing buddies and talking books and writing for a week. It’s great to have a support system who ‘gets it’ when you’re talking about the industry.
Jen: Who are some of your favorite authors and books? What are you reading now?
Kylie: Love Nora! My two favorites of hers are Carnal Innocence and Hidden Riches. I’m a huge fan of Lee Child and his Jack Reacher novels. Right now I’m reading Christie Reece’s Rescue Me.
Jen: What's next for you?
Kylie: Books 2 and 3 in The Mindhunters series (Waking Evil and Waking the Dead) will be released in October and November. I’ve just agreed to three more in the series that will come out in 2010—2011.
Jen: Where can you be found on the web?
Kylie: I’ve just launched a new website fairly recently at www.kyliebrant.com. It features a monthly contest and breaking news, as well as a discussion forum. I blog with nine other authors at http://ridingwiththetopdown.blogspot.com and can also be found at http://freshfiction.com/author.php?id=5609 and http://www.romanceinthebackseat.com/csssrrhp.htm .
Jen: Is there anything you’d like to ask our readers?
Kylie: What draws you to a new author? Is it the cover? The title? Back cover blurb? Do you ever open the book up and read the first paragraph? Flip through the book to see if you like the writing? What motivates your new buys?
Jen: Thank you Kylie for stopping by the blog today. Reader, Kylie is giving away a signed copy of Waking Nightmare. If you'd like to be entered in the drawing leave a comment and be sure to leave your email address. If you'd prefer not to leave your email, send a message to admin.bookblog@gmail.com after you comment. The winner will be chosen on Thursday, September 10.

Greetings Kylie!
I would love to enter your drawing/contest. I will send my address privately to you.
I enjoyed reading your interview! Your new book, "Waking Nightmare" sounds intriguing! I will have to pick this up! To answer your questions:
I am a serious avid reader and I am also President/Founder of a book club. I love hearing about all authors from all different genres and backgrounds. I am usually drawn by the title and book cover however, I will typically go straight to the back and read what the book is about, or read what is online about the book (reviews, etc.). I buy quite a few books per month. My motivation is simply that I have a love for reading and a sincere love and respect for the authors who write books. I cannot imagine my life without books and authors. Seriously. :)
Have a wonderful day!

Hi Kylie,
That was a great interview, once again.
I can't remember reading about your 5 kids. I'm quite speechless. I have 2 and even reading is difficult. Really I'm impressed. I'm impressed too with your tenacity. It takes obviously patience and hard work to become published, congrats !!
Being in France I only shop for my books online. What makes me buy a new author ? Well exactly what you're doing. I spend some (ok a lot) time checking my favorite book blogs and read reviews/interviews/excerpts. All the last books I've baught are new authors for me, discoverd while "blog-hunting".

Hi Sonya! Thanks for stopping by! One of the great things about being a writer is having people to discuss books with--readers and other writers, alike. My husband reads my books but no others. My friends aren't readers. So when I get together at conferences with others with a similar love for books it's quite a treat!
I'm a back cover copy reader myself. And then if the author is unknown to me I'll flip through the pages, reading a few to see if I like the style. I don't read as much as I did before all my free time went into writing but books have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember!
Welcome, Emmanuelle! It is wonderful the way the Internet has brought readers and new books together. I remember what it was like without it--and never want to go back to that day!
Out of my five kids (four sons and a daughter) not a one of them is 'a reader'. Not one. It's my greatest sorrow! They'll all read...but it's not a passion for them. And all complain that when they want books to read they don't know who to buy because they are so unfamiliar with authors. I try to help but they don't even know *what* they like to read!
But I intend to keep working on them!
Just do that !! I wasn't a reader myself until 4 or 5 years ago. What they need is THE book, the one that make you switch off your tv because there is no movie that can compete with a good book. I used to love romantic comedies. Now I only compare them to my favorite SEP's contemporaries and they mostly fell short.
Hi Kylie, congratulation on your new release. I love your SIM books since the first time I picked up "An Irresistible Man". When I noticed that you would have a new series in single titles I feel so exciting. I would really like to see what you can do in a bigger context. I am sure tt is going to be good.

Hello! Please enter me in the contest!! That's awesome that you are giving away a signed copy!
To answer some of your questions...
What draws you to a new author? -
I am guilty of "judging a book by its cover". When perusing bookstores or the library, that's what catches my eye. Color has a lot to do w/it too. I always scan the blurb on the inside cover to see if I'll like it. Then I read the first paragraph or so & if it hooks me, I keep reading!!
Also, with Facebook/MySpace I get a lot of friend requests from authors and then go & see what they have written. If it sounds good, I'll read it.
If I win, please contact me @ punkerdoo_03@hotmail.com. Thanks!
Housemouse--trolling blogs that feature authors is certainly a good way to find books that intrigue you!
Hi May--thanks so much. I hope you get a chance to read the new books. I loved writing them. Had no difficulty filling up the longer format, LOL. It's writing short that causes me problems!
Nicole--your preferences just go to underscore how important it is for an author to get a cover that draws the eye. Not something we have much control over but we try!
Hi Kylie,
I confess to being a back cover blurb person. If it intrigues me, I'll usually buy it. Although I like a great looking cover, they've never motivated me to buy a book. Although lately, I've been finding a lot of interesting authors by doing just what I'm doing now, reading interviews on blogs and wanting to know more about the authors books. It really helps.
Sutton, reading blogs and interviews really is an excellent intro to a new author. I like to go to websites and read excerpts, too, to get an idea of their writing style.
Congratulations on your new book Kylie. When I'm in the bookstore the reason I buy an author I never heard of before is usually the blurb. If it sounds like a story I would really enjoy then I might give it a try.

Hi Kylie,
Enjoyed reading your interview and your new book sounds exciting. Hope I win a copy!!!
I rarely go to a bookstore without my BTB list in hand. I've been known to buy a duplicate because it sounded so good, I had to buy it. Yeah, right...it sounded good because I already had it! Anyway, while in a bookstore, I am attracted to a book by it's cover then the blurb on the back of the cover. I probably won't buy it then because I might already have it (see above)! But I do make a note of the title & author to check it out when I get home. If I don't have it, I'll probably add it to my BTB list after researching it a bit more.

Karen, I have a friend who buys books because they have such pretty covers, only to discover she already got the same book in her TBR pile! I do the same thing with research books.
Welcome Kylie, its nice to meet you! Your books sound like its a great read and I would love to read it. Did you have to do a lot of research for this book?
lead[at]hotsheet[dot]com
Hi Virginia! Yes, all the books are forensics/police procedural so they required extensive research. Book 2 probably took the least. For the first book I had a sergeant in the Savannah police department and the manager of a Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab helping answer questions. For book 3 I had two forensic anthropologists, the crime lab contact and a man who's written a book on the care and feeding of dermestid beetles. (don't ask!)
I also researched the settings for books 1 and 3,even traveling to Oregon for the third book and hiking through the forest and crawling through caves until I found one that suited my villain's purposes!
Great interview, ladies! Kylie, your series sounds very intriguing!
As a newly published author myself, I now know how little input the author has on the cover, so tend to rely more on the blurb and excerpt. Really great reviews and word of mouth also will sway me to purchase an author I haven't yet read.
And of course, contests are a great way to introduce yourself to new readers! I'd love to read Waking Nightmare.
Congrats and best wishes with your release!

Great interview! I can't wait to read your series. Kudos on the new series which sounds exactly like what I enjoy reading.
Please enter me in your drawing. Thank you.

Hi Kylie!
Really enjoyed the interview. The more i know about you, the more i do really want to read the series!
I just came back from your site and i saw the title of book 2 and 3 of the series. And it makes me want to read the blurbs (one more thing, the covers are great ^_^b )
Sometimes i read the title of the book first then read the back cover. Usually i read the back cover then if it's good, i'll buy a book.
For me, what's on the back cover it's important, whether i'll buy it or no.
Reviews, recommendations and excerpts will help to like the book more :)

Hi Kylie! If the book wasn't recommended to me by a friend or another author, it's usually the cover that first catches my attention. I do read the back cover blurb an see if there are reviews inside as well. Contests like this one are great to. They give someone a free chance at trying out a new author. In these financially difficult times that's a welcome thing!!
Great interview. Waking Nightmare sounds like a really good book and I loved the excerpt. Thanks for sharing!

Kylie,
Can I borrow your bio. LOL I've never tried looking for last names in a phonebook. Thanks for mentioning it. I'll try it, too. Great interview.

Would love to be entered in the drawing. Thanks for the chance to win a copy.
What usually motivates me to try a new author are first a great cover. If I am looking at it in person than I will pick it up look at the back cover to read the blurb and if that interests me then I will look inside and get a better feel for the book to make a final decision. If it is online I will go to the author's website and read excerpts. I also rely on recommendations from people who have similiar tastes to mine.
cherierj(at)yahoo(dot)com
Plse enter me in the draw as well! :) Kylie, I've loved your SIMS for the past couple of years, and I visited your new website today. Very nice! I think the colours and crime scene touches are nice and memorable, in a good way! I read all 3 excerpts and am really looking forward to reading the books, because these are exactly the kind I love to read. We need more "intelligent" and well-researched romsusp out there.
As for what gets me to pick up a book, it's definitely the author's name first, cover second. I love the continuity covers for the MINDHUNTERS. Purple's very vivid and gives you a nice ambience. I like a cover that matches the title, eg. the Izzy McNeil series with the red and white covers out right now.
Congratulations on your second Daphne win, also! I just bought it online.

Kylie,
I've read Waking Nightmare already and loved it, and have recommended it to all my friends. I can't wait for the next book, and am thrilled to read there will be more in the series after these first three.
The cover of a book is probably the first thing to draw me to a new book/ author, but it's usually the back blurb that pulls me in.
BTW, Christy Reece's Rescue Me is another great read!
Have a great weekend.
Hi again Kylie! I'm curious as to what your feelings were when you were going through those early rejections. Did you take it well or did you want to give up?

Good interview! Thanks Kylie and Jen. I like your scene of kidnapping with the four ladies at tea! HA! Walking Nightmare and its series sound good. I am drawn to a book's cover and then caught or not by the back cover or inside blurb(s. And if I like a particular author I will of course look at their new books! Thanks for a chance to win. Martha mesreadsATgmail.com
oops I typed Walking Nightmare instead of Waking! (typing too fast!) Sorry. Martha
I want to read this one. :)
I have to say that I do look at covers, then the blurbs, and sometimes I will start reading the first few pages. I find many new authors that way, along with blogs and such. If I like the blurbs I'll buy it. :) Then I share with others after I finish reading the book and love it. :D
