Jen: Readers, please help me welcome Karin Tabke to Book Talk. Karin, will you please share a short bio with us?
Karin: Jen, here’s the official version: For a long time, controlled chaos ruled Karin's life. Busy mother of four, owner of her own successful business and wife to a street cop, she harbored thoughts of twisting plots and hot romantic scenes. Now, with only one child left at home and hubby retired from law enforcement, Karin happily pounds out those steamy scenes at her keyboard.
Still semi-distracted by her adult children (Yay! no more phone calls from the high school!) and her husband now a successful football coach (Yay! No more worrying when he’s out on the street!), Karin turns out stories about hot cops, bold knights, and the women who bring them to their knees.
A full time writer, Karin draws on a lifetime of stories and backdrops that few outside of the law enforcement community ever see, let alone hear about. Controlled chaos now reins supreme through the pages she writes where hot heroes serve, protect, and pleasure from page one to The End.
Jen: Tell us about Master of Craving and where it's available.
Karin: Master of Craving is out May 26 ‘09. It is a twist on the love triangle between David (Blood Sword, Stefan de Valrey) Bathsheba (Princess Arian of Dinefrw) and her husband (Jarl Magnus of Norway). It’s emotional, angsty and in the end, true love conquerors all! The book can be found at all bookstores, online and your neighborhood grocery store
Jen: At what age did you discover writing and when were you first published? Tell us your call story.
Karin: In high school I wrote about my daydreams of being swept off my feet. My first opus was written my senior year. Long hand, and let’s just say it has collected a mound of dust under my bed. It will NEVER see a bookshelf! After high school I still daydreamed and still wrote but not with any seriousness other than enjoying my characters and their lives. I got serious about nine years ago. I stalked my first editor, and finally, after two years, she took pity on me and called. I happened to be recovering from surgery that day. I was drugged, and faintly remember my husband holding the phone to my ear as my soon-to-be-editor offered to buy my book. I graciously and slurridly (new word!) agreed. Several days later when I was more coherent, I read the deal memo and was ecstatic!
Jen: How does your family handle the time that you write? Are they supportive or disruptive?
Karin: I love my family, they has always understood my passion is writing and they have always from the very beginning been nothing but supportive. My husband is my biggest fan, loudest cheerleader and my rock (my mother-in-law comes in a close second!).
Jen: Describe your writing in three words. Karin: Intense. Passionate. Exciting!
Jen: Do you have any “must haves” with you while you’re writing?
Karin: All I need is a laptop.
Jen: Do you have a writing routine?
Karin: I’m a night writer. I get my best work done when the house is completely quiet. Between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m. I have a lusty family that I love to surround myself with and when they are all settled in for the night, it’s my time!
Jen: How do you pick the character’s names?
Karin: Sometimes the names just come to me, mostly with my contemps. But with my historicals, especially with my heroines, I research. My girl’s names have to match their personality and have a significant meaning.
Jen: What is it about the romance genre that appeals to you?
Karin: Passion. A passion for life, for love, for putting everything on the line.
Jen: Is there a genre that you’d like to write? / Is there a genre you’ll probably stay away from and why?
Karin: I’m writing what I love. Sexy historicals and sexy romantic suspense.
Jen: Who has inspired you as an author?
Karin: Linda Howard, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Anita Mills, Katherine Sutcliff
Jen: Do you have a favorite character or one that you identify most with?
Karin: Tarian Godwinson in Master of Torment. She is a survivor. Her tenacity and passion for life drives everything she does. Much the same can be said for Isabel in Master of Surrender, as well as Princess Arian in Master of Craving. Brave ladies willing to put it all on the line for love and country. Jade Deveraux in Jaded is my fave contemporary heroine. She is so damaged but even as a walking wounded she is still brave enough to give love one more chance.
Jen: Do you feel as if the characters live with you as you write? Do they haunt your dreams?
Karin: Absolutely to both questions. I wake up sometimes and they are right there, talking to me. I keep a note pad on my nightstand so I don’t forget what they tell me!
Jen: What has been your highlight of your career to this point?
Karin: Being notified that Jaded won the Romantic Times Review’s Choice Award for best erotic suspense. I loved the characters and the story, and I am so happy to see them honored with this award.
Jen: Most people only dream of becoming a published writer. Now that you’ve accomplished that goal, is there anything else you dream of doing?
Karin: Writing better books. I also want to spread the word that if I can sell to New York, so can anyone else who can tell a story and who is determined. I love giving motivational workshops.
Jen: What's next for you?
Karin: Currently I have a kick ass, sexy as hel, romantic suspense proposal my agent is ready to go out with. I love this series, and I hope to sell to a house that loves it as much as I do.
Jen: Where can you be found on the web?
Karin: www.karintabke.com, www.myspace.com/karintabke, www.twitter.com/karintabke, www.facebook.com/karintabke, www.murdershewrites.com
I’m everywhere! And I love to chat!

Eek, forgot the question - I love the happy endings the most. When you read one, you can almost guarantee there's goign to be happy ending...there will be strife, impatience, and it can be a bit wild getting there, but hte happy ending is worth it!
I love that you write from 12-4 AM. It just makes the book sound more naughty or forbidden, you know? :)
Can't wait for this one!!

Yay Karin! :) Happy to see you again.
My fav thing about romance novels would have to be the characters. they are all varied, come from different paths to life, and go down different roads, but love and romance is universal for them all. :) Love a great story!

Nice interview! I haven't read your books yet, but have heard good things about them so I'll definitely have to give them a try.
My favorite thing about romance novels is the hero and heroine and how they fall in love. I love to read about people falling in love. Through them I get to feel those magical first moments again and remember how I met my own man...
Rachie, sometimes they are naughtier! ;) You know I love an HEA!
Hey, Lyoness fancy meeting you here! Happy Thursday. I'm with you on the characters. For me the more complex and tortured the better.
Thanks, Maija! I like what you like. The tension, the excitement, the thrill of the chase and all of the anticipation that goes with it. I love reading it, and I LOVE writing it.
Hey Karin - Just following you over here from twitter :)
Anyway - they main thing I love about romance novels - is the variety: paranormal, historical, contemporary, time-travel, suspense, and I'm going to definitely have an HEA :) No matter what authors put the characters through.
By the way - if I'm lucky enough to win I would love a copy of Jaded.
Hi Karin! I love that with a romance book, I love knowing that they will get their happy ending, but too love to read about their journey to getting there, the build up of the intensity of their love for each other.
Very excited on your new book!! Loved reading your interview. Great questions J&J. Too the characters stay with me long after I read the books and too come up so much weeks after I read them. Its like I get to visit with them a bit!
I love knowing there is a happy ending so I can enjoy the twists and turns of the stories and characters that bring me there.
I'm a sucker for happy endings even if it's somewhat predictable.
A great romance story will have lots of sexual tension, amazing chemistry, a bit of humor, overcoming the big bad, and a hero and heroine that are strong, passionate, and memorable.
Haven't started this series yet and would love to read Master of Surrender.
Thanks for sharing, karin. You sound like you love what you're doing and that's HUGE!
The best part of romance novels for me is the sexual tension. In today's world, there is so much out there whether we want it or not. It's nice to have to "wait" for something :-)
Question for you: how did you actually stalk an editor? Just curious because I may have to resort to that!
As for your giveaways, I'm sure either one would be my pleasure to receive.
I love the journey to a happy ending; how they got there and what they endured to get there.
I'm feeling JADED, lol. Just a try at humor-I'd love JADED if I win.
hi, Greta! You can follow me any day!
Caffey, I'm super excited about MASTER OF CRAVING too!!
Maureen, the journey is so much fun. the twistier and turner the better!
Bridge, i'm with you. knowing there will be an HEA guarantees I'll pick up a romance over another genre any day!
Cathy, I love good, solid, natural sexual tension. All of my books, whether its the hot cops or the hot knights, are stuffed with it. :)
Robin I do LOVE what I do. I can't imagine doing anything else.
Robyn after you read JADED you *will be* JADED! In a very very good way.
Great interview, Jen and Karen.
I like danger in my romances with the hero saving the heroine, or maybe the other way around.
It's nice to have a HEA, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a wedding. Just hope is enough for me.
If I win, I'm not picky. Either one, thanks. Smile.
Hi, Karin. Romances are about believing love can happen when we least expect it.
Characters, characters, characters. Peeling away the emotional layers. Characters. Relationships. Characters.
I'm curious about how you keep connected books from becoming info dumps of back story for returning readers, while bringing new readers up to speed. (I always start with book 1, because so many authors don't handle it well, and I'd rather not take a chance).
Either book is fine with me.
Hi Karin,
I've never read your work but from the sound of this interview, I'm missing something here. Jaded sounds like a book I could really get into. Gotta add to my BTB list!
The pat answer is HEA, but I really like the character development best...the push/pull, give/take, love/hate situations the H/H go through to arrive at the HEA make it all the more worth it!
Hi Karin. Congratulations on the release of Master of Craving.
What I love most about romance novels is that you get to experience the couple's journey as they fall in love.
I would love to read Master of Surrender.
Hi, Karin!
Great to read your interview! My favorite part about romance novels is the hopefulness and the certainty that the characters will find love and the HEA. And of course, the million different ways that happens with all the zillion books out there!
I'm a bit of a night owl myself, and love that you're a night writer :) So, uh, when do you sleep? Or are you one of those enviable people who thrives on a couple hours a day?
