Jen: This week we welcome J.K. Coi as our special guest. J.K., will you please share a short bio with us?
J.K.: Sure. Do you want interesting, or do you want the truth? (lol) I’m Canadian born and bred, and I currently live in Ontario with my husband and six year old son. I work full time in a busy law firm. Litigation is my forte, although I had recently been working in Intellectual Property which is trademark, patent and copyright law. When I’m not working and I’m not writing (rare) I like to do stained glass.
Jen: Tell us about Dark Immortal.
J.K.: Dark Immortal is book 3 in the Immortals Series.
Here's the blurb...
Five years of happiness, erased in one vicious attack.
Diana. Beautiful. Strong. Brave. She once freed Alric from his prison and the insanity of his own mind, offering the kind of love only a fool would deny. Now she lies broken and comatose from a vampire attack, locked deep inside herself where he cannot reach her.
Diana awakens in a strange bed with no memory of how she got there. She only knows that the huge, muscled man leaning over her is straight out of nightmares full of blood and pain. Married to him? It can’t be true…even if her body craves his touch, and the anguish in his eyes shatters something deep inside her.
Alric has no intention of giving up on the woman who never stopped fighting for him. His one hope is that time will heal her mind. But with a demon god poised to tip the balance of power, time is not on their side…
Jen: At what age did you discover writing and when were you first published? Tell us your call story. J.K.: I used to write short stories when I was in high school, which continued on into university. But I didn’t start to write seriously until after my son was born. My call story isn’t really any different from every other author. My first book took about a year to write, then edit. I entered a contest with it—and won—then I started to submit to agents and editors. After a slew of rejections, I did find a home for it with Linden Bay Romance. They were immediately interested in whether or not I planned a series. I hadn’t given that a lot of thought, but once the idea was planted, it made a lot of sense and I liked the idea of giving the other characters their story.
Jen: How do you approach your writing? Do you plot or go with the flow? J.K.: I generally start with a scene in my head. I let it sit there for a while until I have a good idea who the characters are, and then I let myself play with the “what ifs”. I don’t plot too much, because once I start writing, my train of thought goes off in different directions and the rough idea I started with doesn’t look anything like what I finish with.
Jen: Do you have any “must haves” with you while you’re writing? J.K.: Just the computer. I don’t have a special toy sitting on my desk or a hat I need to be wearing. The hardest part for me is finding time. So wherever and whenever I can carve out an hour or so, I’m happy.Jen: What’s the most challenging aspect of writing? Easiest? J.K.: The most challenging part is finding time—and when I do have time, using it effectively, not letting distractions get in the way. The easiest part is probably starting something new. When I’m finally at the point where I’m ready to sit down and start a new book, I’m flying. It’s fresh and exciting and the words flow the best. Then that energy eventually runs out and finishing takes more discipline.
Jen: Do you do anything special to celebrate a sale, new contract, or release? J.K.: I should, but in fact every time I’ve gotten a new contract (besides the first one), I’ve been under a massive deadline and had no time to celebrate properly. Maybe I’ll try to do something cool next time.
Jen: Is there a genre that you’d like to write? J.K.: I enjoy writing urban fantasy/paranormal. It’s what I do best, although I’m currently working on a straight contemporary as well as a post-apocalyptic futuristic romance.
Jen: What's next for you? J.K.: I’ll have two more books coming out this year. Forever Immortal is out early-Summer and Absolute Justice will be out in the Fall. Forever Immortal is Gideon’s story, while Absolute Justice is about a vampire that we met in book 2. You’ll be able to read more about these books on my website: http://www.jkcoi.com
Jen: Where can you be found on the web? J.K.: I have a quarterly newsletter that has lots of great information and treats, and you can sign up here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jkcoi/join. Also, visit me at my website for more information about upcoming books, chats, interviews, reviews, and all things Immortal: http://www.jkcoi.com. I’m also on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/jkcoi and I blog at http://www.jkcoi.blogspot.com.
Jen: Do you have anything you’d like to ask our readers?
J.K.: I always love to find out what people are doing. I mentioned above that in my spare time I like to do stained glass. What are your hobbies? Love to read? What great new authors have you discovered lately? Finally, if you have any questions for me, please feel free to ask! Thanks so much to Jen and Book Talk for having me here today!
Jen: And thanks to you, J.K., for joining us this week. Readers, J.K. is giving away an ecopy of Dark Immortal to a random commenter this week. So, answer one of her questions or ask her something and you'll be entered in the drawing. A winner will be chosen on Thursday, February 26 around 5:00 pm PDT.

When I'm not writing or reading, I enjoy knitting. I love making things! And I also discovered a new writer that I love, Helen Scott Taylor. The Magic Knot is amazing!
Margay
What started the series in your head? I mean the first thought that transformed itself into an urge to sit and write it down. Was it a dream? a scene? Someone you saw and thought of them in these circumstances?
Usually I paint if I'm not reading or writing (or running around the house after my 6 years old).
Nice interview.
Su Halfwerk
Hi Margay! Knitting is a wonderful hobby and I tried it once, but it didn’t take. Couldn’t get my fingers to do that :)
Su, the first thing that started me on this path with this series was a single scene with the hero from book 1, Rhys—and oddly enough that scene didn’t even make it into the final book, but it was enough to get the creative juices flowing, to spark my interest so that I wanted to know more.
Well, how amazing! Now I'm curious - is that deleted scene available on you website somewhere? I'm just as curious about what doesn't make it into a book/movie as what does.
Margay
I would love to win but think I don't qualify as I have won at J&J's in the last 2 months but wanted to revisit here. I started with your first paragraph of this interview and you name and book went instantly to my to buy list and as I hate starting in the middle of a series, the first books will have to be bought first on my next trip to the bookstore... I look forward to reading them... as for what I do besides working as a nurse, addicted to reading and the computer, I love plants but don't have a green thumb, love animals, 4 dogs, 8 cats (outside/barn) 5 horses, 1 goat, will soon have a cow to add, love painting (paint my numbers... no talent here) love puzzles.... is that enough.... talk about finding time to write... lol
Margay, I'll have to think about putting that up on the website at some point. Sounds like a good idea!
Metonia! It sounds like you love animals as much as I do. My husband always jokes that I'm a sucker for a pretty twitch of whisker. Almost got a donkey once, but I let him talk me out of it, and that was only because we didn't have the room and I managed to find another good home for him.
Hi J.K.,
What have you noticed are the differences between the U.S. and Canada markets for your work and for your genre in general?
I like to run, read and write (mostly nonfiction but also short stories). My father-in-law was an excellent craftsman of stained glass art objects. I read by the light of one of his lamps every day.
Hi Gary, since my books are released as by small press in both ebook and in print, it is much easier to promote the books in any market, but when it comes to the print books, getting them up into the stores in Canada is much more difficult.
And I love to run as well (pretty much the only exercise I do). It's harder in the winter, but I have a treadmill. I love getting outside though and right about now, I'm itching for a nice stretch of road and a mild day without a snowstorm.
I like to walk, read, write, and do crafts. Oh, and my numerous pets.
Do you find the promotional aspect of being a writer difficult?
Interesting blog!
Hi Lara,
The promotional stuff is not so much difficult as it is time consuming. Between the full time job, my family and my writing, it's another ball I have to juggle that can sometimes make everything seem a little overwhelming. But I enjoy it because I like to meet new people (even online), and of course I get to talk about my books :)
Hi, J.K! My spare time is devoted to...reading and...reading :) I don't watch much TV but I always have a book in tow.
Great interview! I'm very curious about that deleted scene now... :)
Hey from a fellow Ontario-an author. Here in Toronto. When I'm not writing, I'm reading or doing promotion. I'm intrigued by your post apocalyptic idea so I'd love to hear more about that as I'm just about done writing apocalyptic/supernatural/thriller novel.
Your excerpt for Dark Immortal gave me yummy shivers and I would soooo love to win a copy.
I usually ready historical romances but I'm slowly getting into the paranormal/fantasy genre through other writers I've come in contact with like Lesli Richardson and Dahlia Rose.
Hi J.K.
I love to read and do that all the time. I also enjoy photography and have taken up fishing with my husband and love that.
Anastasia, thanks for dropping in! I can't leave the house without a book and now that I have a Sony Reader, that is even easier! I love it!
Nancy, so nice to meet another Ontario author! The post-apocalyptic story is one that I started working on about a year ago, but at the time it wasn't calling to me as loudly as the Immortals were. NOW it's starting to get pretty demanding and wants some attention, so I'm hoping to work on it soon!
Lisa, my husband LOVES fishing, and I don't mind joining him in the summertime when I can bring a lawn chair with me and read in the sun--but when he goes ice fishing in the dead of winter in a tiny little hut that has no bathroom--I just don't see the appeal :)
Hi J.K., when I am not working or surfing the internet , I love to read. I read all kinds of stories, historicals, Sci fi, paranormal, horror and thrillers. As long as it has romance and that it catches my interest.
Your blurb of Dark Immortal was fascinating.
Ana, it always excites me when I hear that people love to read. My husband is a teacher and he comes home every day with stories of kids who can't read and it makes me sad to hear it. It's my hope that books like the twilight series, Harry Potter and other great YA will help kids to find a passion for reading and increase (both) our nations' literacy.
Reading is my only hobby. lol. Violet Summers was a new author to me. I read about 4 of her books this past week.
Hi Amy, keep reading!
:)
Seems like I don't have free time anymore, and when I do, I'm overwhelmed with everything I have to do that nothing gets accomplished. Guess I gotta work on that somehow. When I'm avoiding the things I should be doing, I'm usually playing some mindless computer game. Right now I'm obsessed with Zuma.
You mentioned that you may start with a scene in your head that may never make it in the book. Do you feel as if that story wasn't finished? Or if you have an idea for a story, but the finished product only vaguely resembles the idea, do you bad that the original story wasn't told, or do you just go with the new story and forget about the original idea? Does that make any sense? It does in my own head. :)
-jessica
Hi Jessica! If a story starts as one thing and ends up being another through the natural process of writing it, then I don’t necessarily feel as if something is missing. I look at it more like evolution—this is the way it was supposed to end up, and hopefully the story is better for it.
Most of my down time is spent reading, it totally recharges me. One new author that I recently discovered was Cameron Dane. She has a paranormal romance series that I fell in love with.
Do you have any favorite cover models that you'd like to have on future covers in your series? *goes back to admiring cover of Dark Immortal*
Oh, Cathy I've read one of Cameron's books and it was great!
Chris *sigh* Isn't it great! I lurve my cover, couldn't be happier with it :)
And I have no idea who else I'd like to have on one of my covers, but if Hugh Jackman is looking to get into cover modeling, he's welcome to audition for my next book!
Oh yes. Hugh Jackman. (sighs) Now there is a man born to be a romantic hero.
Hey, JK,
Congrats! Sending best wishes for mucho success. You're a great writer!
Keta
Hi Keta, thanks for the kudos!
Hmm. I have a lot of hobbies. I guess I love being busy, occupied or entertain. I read a lot, I do tarot readings with friends and I cross-stitch. I recently discovered Carrie Vaughn Kitty Norville series. :D

Good evening, I have never read one of your books beofre but they look delicious. Do you plan many more inthis series. Do you wnat to do a different typoe of book?
I typically don't have a lot of free time, but when I do, I'm usually reading or browsing blogs and looking for new ones that may be interesting. I love to see what other people post.
Congratulations on your success!
On my free time I like to read. I like to bake. I like to work in the garden and grow some herbs and vegetables in the summertime. I like to watch a good romance movie and I like listening to classical music. And most importantly I love to spend time with all my family members, especially my great gradchildren.
J.K., thanks for being our guest this week.
